A portion of tinder supported inside a transparent cylinder is ignited when the contained air is compressed by a hand operated piston
Suitable tinder is provided, though almost any organic material will do if dry enough, i.e. cotton, charcoal, tissue paper.
You can also demonstrate the need for oxygen to support combustion by attempting to re-ignite a piece of tinder. It will only occur if the piston is completely removed from the cylinder and a supply of fresh air introduced.
A cloud can be formed in the cylinder by, having compressed the air inside it, allowing a sudden decompression. The reduction in pressure lowers the temperature and immediately condenses the water vapour inside the cylinder. This can be seen quite easily, but is often mistaken for smoke given the combustion that has already taken place.
Suitable from Key Stage 4 (GCSE) to university levels of education.

The whole package was soaked in oil and full of shards, the wood is permanently stained and I needed to clean up a whole mess :( in addition I need to purchase new lubricant because the device doesnt work without it! Thats really unfortunate and I was so close sending it back... But due to additional costs (Im in Germany) I am hesitating... This is probably caused by pushing the piston down at an angle. Replacement cylinders would be an advantage. Manufacturers note: Thank you for your review. Replacement cylinders are available if required. Please contact us for details. Please note the cylinders should not crack if pushed straight down, please try to avoid pushing at an angle. MANUFACTURER'S UPDATE (February 2015): Following this, in 2014 we also changed the cylinder to a stronger material and have had no reports of the new cylinder cracking :) |
